Pangs of new art

"Civilization is crumbling"

Bill "the Butcher" Cutting is one of my all time favorite baddies and as always Daniel Day Lewis' onscreen intensity is just mind boggling...

(This time I've tried to create the piece in a quasi-digital painting-style and am reasonably happy with the output)

Ol' Blue Eyes

The greatest singer ever - The Voice... The Chairman of the board... Frank Sinatra !
His birth anniversary had passed a fortnight ago...this is a small tribute...
I don't think I could ever get tired of listening to Frank sing... What's your favorite Sinatra number?
PS: Have been searching for 'The man with the golden arm'... anybody ?

Black Mamba

Normally I find it hard to draw women(pun intended), so I rarely try... this is one piece I've wanted to do for a long time... I never quite seem to nail it ! This is one of the not so bad attempts...

PS1: Guess Bill had Kaala Sarpa dosham ! (Deepa, pardon this pun ;) )

PS2: If anyone has 'Flight of the bumblebee' please mail it to me.

our grapes...

A bowl of fresh, green seedless grapes ... and a bag of wrinkled, sun dried California raisins...
The former sucked, but the latter was heavenly !
Go figure ...

A Sublime Weekend

What an unbelievable weekend !
First, Bharadwaj Rangan dropped by my blog and said he loved my Ghajini spoof and thought it was 'great stuff' and even asked if I would like to 'do illustrations for a paper' and said he'd 'be happy to help' ! That too after I'd dropped a comment on his blog which in all probability he could have deemed petty and offensive(though it wasn't meant to be). But awesome bloke that he is, patiently replied with a huge comment to my comment and also dropped by my blog and said he loved the piece... I know I said this before but that was just outta the world ! woohoo !
For those who came in late Rangan is easily the best movie critic in the country and he gets to add the title 'national award winner' to his name on account of his winning best film critic in 2005 ;)
And so over the next 2 days more than a 100 people(all regular readers of the immensely respected and popular Rangan's blog) came over to mine on account of his high praise. Well, only 2 of them replied and one said I oughta be in the papers if I already wasn't. Anyway its great to have so many eyeballs from all over the place coming over to the blog !
Thanks Rangan :) !

And with Sunday, D-day arrived. Yes, our play 'Battle of the Sexes' by the Rebelz !
A friend of mine had asked me earlier if I was nervous especially since 2 scripts I wrote were being staged and I pooh poohed the thought, but heck I was nervous as hell !
What if the auditorium was empty to start off with ?
What if the audience found none of the lines funny ? What if the puns were not caught ?
It was quite an experience waiting in the green room and peeking out to get a glimpse of the stage and waiting with bated breath to see which lines got laughs and which fell flat and which went unnoticed ! And since I was also helping with the props I was sure I was gonna knock over the glass jar or trip on a cable but thankfully everything went smoothly.
Well pessimism doesnt really help I know...thankfully one look at a jam packed crowd in Alliance Francaise's Top Storey kinda laid mosta the doubts to rest ! 3 housefull(and more) shows ! Couldnt have asked for a bigger turnout ! I was told we had to turn away some people due to a full house...
With 'Battle of the sexes',we Rebelz have 'made it to a new level' according to one of the respected theater personalities in town!
Well we all had our part to play and the Rebelz spirit came out in full flow !!!
Great show guys !
Personally I'm mighty pleased ...A highly successful debut as a 'playwright' methinks ;)
...for more on us go over here... http://www.rebelz.in

Some of my friends ask me why I haven't tried my hand at acting too...I tell them I stick to my strengths-art and writing ! Let's leave the acting to the people with charisma and stage presence shall we :)
Besides I dont think I would have done justice to any of the characters after seeing how well they were performed by the chosen actors...
Some loyal friends from the blogosphere showed their support by coming for the show and dragged along their friends.I do know that at times it must be a bit difficult convincing people to shell out money to watch a relatively new theater group when they can spend it on a movie, but for those that kept the faith, THANKS :) ! Hope you guys enjoyed the show and got your money's worth ! And thanks for the terrific feedback too !
Personally for me,the 'highlight' of the evening was when this beeeyoootiful girl from the audience came up to me and said she thought the scripts were great ! Mostly, only the actors were the ones getting the handshakes and pats on the back from the audience members, so this felt great ! Whoever you are, thanks :D !!!

The next day it was back to normalcy owing to *ugh* office, but the feeling of euphoria will still linger for a few days to come !

I'm not there

I finally saw 'I'm not there' last night ! Todd Haynes has probably done what every fan boy would love to do for his idol ! If yer a Dylan fan this is a must-watch movie ! It experiments with the medium brilliantly. Cate Blanchett steals the show and that's quite a feat considering she was up against the likes of Christian Bale and Heath Ledger. But I wonder what Dylan himself thought of the movie(if he saw it). This old sketch was drawn before I started drawing caricatures and I had to dig it out to put up on the blog after last night.

I also caught the last few minutes of 'Factory Girl'(based on the life of Edie Sedgewick) last night. The guy supposed to be Dylan in that movie shares the same last name with the Dylan persona played by Blanchett in the other movie…hmm. I'm still waiting for Dylan's 'chronicles' volume 2 to come out…

There has also been many theories about Dylan's 'Like a Rolling Stone' being based on Edie but we'll never know…

Next stop: 'No direction home' !

Surprised to see me?

Only a human mind could invent something as insipid as love...

Was watching the Matrix revolutions last night and I just had to draw this guy ! He's the best character in the movie (well, if you discount the luscious Trinity)

Good ol' Charlie Brown and me

Sometimes it's hard to differentiate between good ol' Charlie Brown and good ol' me...

Schizoliloquy, part deux

We aren't the same you and I
there's more between us than meets the eye
you're the reluctant star in the spotlight
I'm the wary artist craving a place in the sun
you're merely flash in the pan y'know
unless you're slain I possibly couldn't grow
but yes you're not invisible like I am
maybe I never was, I'm not quite sure
but I've been proven wrong time and again
I believe that, but I guess you don't
This is, perhaps, temporary redemption
it won't last long I promise you that
I see your revelry in the paradise of fools
I pity your illusions, they blind you no end
I see fallen angels in your wake…
perhaps all you are, is a corpse on stilts
I've carried the burden but I've had enough
its about time the scales tilted
I'd rather I stayed 6 foot above than under…
Truth be told you're a mere pretender
your plastic smile doesn't fool me
Stop now lest they believe your lies
I'm your past and I'm your future
The present is but transient
in all fairness that's your only excuse…
but I haven't got the heart to fake happiness
so I'll allow you to enjoy this while it lasts
because I'm sure I'll have the final word…

Alright you've had your say
but this is my turf now
here's what I have to say
listen up and listen good
maybe you are right
I am the mirage that time will kill
but while I'm alive, you will remain
the man in the mirror that time shunned
So you think you're really wise?
I think you've already paid the price
you can't handle this world my friend…
remember the Bard's words ?
not to mention your stage fright
go away now, lay down your sword
you can't play the games I play
there's no room here for a lonely misfit…
Your truth is no better than my deceit…
perhaps what seperates you and me,
is my fear of success and your fear of failure…
it's time you went back into the deep recesses
of your mind, and wait till I'm consumed by time
This is my glory and you shall not share it
lemme drop in a rhyme, grin and bear it !
those angels you talk about
are dead only in your mind,
if there are more I'll find 'em
but you? I have my doubts !
Manufactured happiness, instant gratification
that's how it works now, love it or leave it
