Its his 92nd birth anniversary today.
Deano is perhaps the only crooner I love almost as much as Sinatra. And if I were to disregard perfection as a criteria Deano would score over Frank. His nonchalant and seemingly effortless rendering style is unmatched and I've read his old showbiz partner Jerry Lewis say that Dean didn't take his singing that seriously and never quite believed he could be the best around, and it is perhaps that cool, laid back attitude that oozes through so marvelously in his songs, that make him that much more appealing... He's a laugh riot in the live audio tapes of the RatPack in their Vegas shows...I wish I could get some videos of those shows or any of his TV specials...
I guess he also didn't take his acting that seriously and I wish he'd done more movies. His drunk character (might I add, named Dude) in Howard Hawks' 'Rio Bravo' is my favorite performance of his.As far as songs go,its hard to name my favorites,I guess I love them all.Apparently Scorcese is making a biopic on Sinatra and it would be interesting to see who he picks to play Deano.
